Baumann Skin Type® DRNW: What You Need to Know

If you are a DRNW, a few good skin habits can dramatically improve your skin’s health.  Your skin needs a strengthened skin barrier to help skin hold onto water and improve hydration. You also need an anti-aging strategy for your skin. The good news is that you are less susceptible to inflammation and uneven skin pigmentation than other skin types.

What Is DRNW Skin?

DRNW skin is Dry, Resistant, Non-Pigmented, and Wrinkled. This means that your skin has an impaired skin barrier leading to dehydration but is resistant to inflammation and unwanted pigmentation. Your lifestyle habits and age put you in a category that needs anti-aging ingredients. The age range for DRNT skin types is usually 30 years or older. If you are under 30 and the skin type test diagnosed you as a DRNW skin type then your lifestyle habits include deleterious behaviors such as tanning beds, smoking, and unprotected sun exposure.  These habits increase your risk of skin and and skin cancer so you must adopt protective skin care measures.  If you are over 30, it is also time for you to add skin protective strategies even if you avoid sun, smoking and other harmful habits.

The Most Common Problems for DRNW Skin Types

DRNWs have an impaired skin barrier which means that water evaporates off of the skin’s surface in a process known s as transepidermal water loss (TEWL). This can lead to dry, rough, uncomfortable skin.  Dry, dehydrated skin lacks the water that enzymes need to function well so various protective skin functions are adversely affected. Helping the skin to retain water is the first step to healthy skin for DRNWs. DRNWs are also at a greater risk of losing vital components that keep skin looking and acting young. It is important for DSNWs to adopt strategies to increase production and decrease loss of these vital components.  Mnay of the lifestyle factors that lead to skin aging (such as sun exposure) also increase the risk of skin cancer.  The same protective strategies can help reduce the risk of skin cancer when used consistently. For DRNW types, the best defence is a great offence, so take heed now so that you can avoid the perils of years of skin damage later.

Caring for DRNW Skin

It is never too late to start taking great care of your skin. Here are also a few general guidelines that DRNW Skin Types should follow to help keep their skin healthy and hydrated.

  • Cleanse with cream, milk, oil or lotion nonfoaming cleansers instead of foaming cleansers that strip necessary lipids and injure your skin’s protective barrier.

  • Moisturize with a product that contains the barrier repair ingredients ceramide, fatty acids such as stearic acid and cholesterol.

  • Sunscreen – All skin types should use a SPF of at least 15 every day to maintain skin health. Chemical sunscreens are an option for those over 13 years old but under the gae of 13, a physical sunscreen such as those containing zinc oxide and titanium are the best options.

  • Antioxidants – will help protect against free radical damage. Antioxidants in skin care, diet and supplements can help prevent damage from sun, pollution and other damaging exposures.

Dr. Baumann’s Bottom Line

DRNW needs a consistent hydrating and protecting skincare routine and a healthy diet rich in antioxidants. Using a barrier repair moisturizer twice a day, a daily sunscreen and a non-foaming cleanser will repair the skin barrier and get you on the road to healthy skin.
